Treating Migraine

Most people who suffer from migraines complain most about the intense headache – this type of migraine is called migraine without aura, and it’s the worse of the two types (the other one being migraine with aura).

A person suffering from migraine without aura also experiences most of the vestibular symptoms that migraine with aura has, along with other inexplicable symptoms like depression, craving sweets, etc.

For those who experience these discomforts, the quickest solution is medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers and prescription drugs typically work in alleviating the pain; however, the quick relief they offer typically does not last long.

Over time, migraine sufferers become immune to the effects of these drugs and require a more frequent or higher dosage to achieve the same relief that the previous recommended lower dosages used to provide.

It’s rather understandable that the goal of these people is purely to be freed from all the debilitating effects (intense headaches, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, vertigo, and others) of the condition, but this short-sightedness can spawn new health problems.

The high toxicity that a frequent and higher dosage of medication creates is known to damage the kidneys and liver, which is just as big a health concern as migraine. Plus, these pain relievers tend to have other harmful side effects such as heartburn, dyspepsia, and diarrhoea, to cite a few. Therefore, even if medication works, it’s not always the best solution.

Chiropractic for migraine

Fortunately, medication is not the only solution migraine sufferers can try. There’s an assortment of other treatments that have been proven to yield great results. Moreover, they have few to no side effects, and can even promote better health.

One that’s gaining much attention these days is chiropractic care. Studies reveal that spinal manipulation has produced amazing results for people with migraine. Participants in the tests to determine the efficacy of chiropractic treatments reported reduced intensity of symptoms, especially headache, and a significant decrease in the occurrence of migraine. Thus, they no longer needed to take medication much, if at all.

Other treatment options

Other alternative solutions to migraine also include a complete lifestyle change: improving dietary practices, sleeping habits, doing away with vices such as consumption of alcohol and smoking, meditation for stress reduction, and exercising.

Now when it comes to pain management, pain specialists typically design a programme composed of various strategies such as acupuncture, reflexology and physical therapy, homeopathy, psychotherapy (because migraines typically occur when a person’s stress levels are high), hypnosis, and others.

So if you suffer from migraines, explore all the available alternatives because while some of them do not provide instantaneous relief, they can prove to be much, much safer and they also offer other wellness benefits.
