Chiropractic For Pregnancy

Chiro for Pregnancy care

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change—physically, emotionally and hormonally. While it brings joy and anticipation, it also brings new demands on your body. As your baby grows and your body adapts, it’s common to experience discomfort, changes in posture, ligament loosening and increased load on your spine and pelvis.

That’s where prenatal chiropractic care comes in. With gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments tailored for pregnancy, you can support your body to adapt smoothly, relieve pain, and promote optimal function for both this pregnancy and the birth ahead.

What I Offer in Pregnancy Chiropractic Treatment

  • Gentle, low-force chiropractic adjustments designed for pregnancy, using specially-adapted tables to safely accommodate your growing tummy.
  • Collaborative care: I work alongside your midwife, obstetrician or doula to ensure your prenatal health is supported holistically.
  • Safe exercise and stretching guidance, tailored specifically for pregnancy to maintain mobility, relieve tension and support your changing body.
  • Practical support and education: I’ll help you understand how your spine, pelvis and nervous system are adapting, and how you can optimise comfort, labour and birth.

How Chiropractic Care May Support Your Pregnancy

Relief from Pregnancy-Related Back Pain

As your body adjusts to increased weight, hormonal ligament changes, and postural strain, many pregnant women develop back- and pelvic-related discomfort. Gentle, specific chiropractic care can relieve these postural stresses. One study found 75% of pregnant patients experienced relief from back pain after chiropractic care (see note 1 below). Another review found an 84% relief rate in their sample. (2)

Support for Labour and Birth

Recent New Zealand research on chiropractic adjustments in pregnant women found favourable changes in pelvic-floor muscle relaxation. (3) The earlier review (2) also noted that chiropractic care may reduce incidences of “back labour” — intense lower-back pain during labour.

Potential for Shorter Labour

Some evidence suggests that women who receive chiropractic care may have shorter labour times: one analysis of first pregnancies reported an average 25% reduction in labour length, while women in subsequent pregnancies saw an average 31% reduction. (4, 5)

FAQ — Prenatal Chiropractic Treatment

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Prenatal chiropractic care uses adapted tables, low-force techniques and takes into account the physiological changes of pregnancy to ensure safety for both mother and baby.

When should I start chiropractic care in pregnancy?

You can begin prenatal chiropractic at any stage of your pregnancy. The earlier you address postural or spinal changes, the better you’ll be positioned for comfort and optimal function during labour.

How many visits will I need?

It varies depending on factors such as your current discomfort, how your body is adapting, and your birth preparation goals. We’ll discuss a tailored plan during your initial consultation.

Can chiropractic care reduce labour time or complications?

While no treatment can guarantee a specific outcome, some research indicates prenatal chiropractic is associated with reduced labour time and lower incidence of back labour. (4, 5)

What if I have existing back problems or a high-risk pregnancy?

Prenatal chiropractic can still be appropriate. I will review your full health history, collaborate with your obstetrician or midwife, and ensure the care plan is safe and tailored to your needs.

Will chiropractic care help after the baby is born?

Absolutely. Post-partum chiropractic care supports your recovery, helps restore spinal and pelvic balance after pregnancy and labour, and supports your body as you adapt to caring for your newborn.
