Don’t Let Shoulder and Arm Pain Hold You Back

Shoulder and arm pain can be incredibly disruptive, even debilitating, especially when pain stops you from getting a good night’s sleep or from getting on with your day-to-day tasks. Simple activities like reaching for something on a high shelf, typing on a keyboard, or even driving your car can become a challenge.

At Balance Chiropractic, we understand how unpleasant this can be and are here to help you get back to living life to the fullest.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Your Shoulder and Arm Pain?

Chiropractic care offers a holistic and drug-free approach to managing and treating shoulder and arm pain. Rather than just masking the symptoms, we focus on identifying and addressing the root cause. This involves a thorough assessment of your spine, especially the neck and upper back, as misalignments in these areas can directly affect the nerves that travel to your shoulder and arm.

At our Epping clinic, we use gentle, evidence-informed techniques to restore proper joint function, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate nerve irritation. By improving the communication between your central nervous system and the rest of your body, we can help reduce pain, increase your range of motion, and promote your body’s natural healing abilities.

Here’s how I help:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to improve the function in your neck and affected nerves
  • Massage to soothe, free up and restore elasticity to affected muscles, tendons and ligaments
  • Mobilisation to relieve the pain of inflamed joints
  • Advice on home care to relieve pain and promote healing
  • Instruction on simple stretching and strengthening exercises to do at home

These are all ways that I will help you to regain movement and relieve pain. All of this is without the need for any prescription medications and the treatment is safe and gentle. Chiropractic helps your body to heal naturally without invasive surgery or treatment with powerful painkillers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes shoulder and arm pain?

Shoulder and arm pain can be caused by various issues, including nerve irritation, muscle strains, joint dysfunction, and poor posture. The pain often originates in the neck or upper back, where nerves that travel to the shoulder and arm are located. See below for more common causes of shoulder and arm pain.

Is chiropractic treatment safe for shoulder pain?

Yes, when performed by a qualified and experienced chiropractor like Dr Gunther, chiropractic treatment for shoulder pain is very safe. All techniques are gentle and specifically adapted to your condition and comfort level. Dr Gunther has extensive experience treating shoulder conditions and uses evidence-based approaches that minimise any risk, while maximising therapeutic benefit.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the severity and cause of your pain. Dr. Gunther will create a personalised care plan for you after your initial consultation.

Can chiropractic treatment help with rotator cuff injuries?

Absolutely. Chiropractic care can be highly effective for many rotator cuff problems, including minor tears, impingement, and tendinitis. Treatment focuses on improving shoulder blade mechanics, reducing inflammation, and gradually restoring strength and mobility. While severe rotator cuff tears may require surgical intervention, many patients find significant relief through conservative chiropractic care.

What can I expect during my first visit?

During your first visit, Dr. Gunther will perform a thorough examination to identify the source of your pain. He will discuss your health history, assess your movement, and create a tailored treatment plan to help you achieve your health goals.

Shoulder & Arm Pain Causes

Neck injuries

These can cause referred pain in the shoulder and arm. Nerves that come from the spinal column vertebrae in the neck can be irritated or compressed if the cervical vertebrae get misaligned as a result of accident, trauma, postural problems or repetitive injury.

This can lead to pain and muscle numbness or weakness being felt in the shoulder or arm although the root cause of the problem is in the neck. Often other symptoms such as headache and dizziness can be experienced by patients.

Injury to the Rotator Cuff

The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder that connect the upper arm to the shoulder blade providing stability to the shoulder and allowing it to rotate.

Rotator Cuff Tear

An injury to the rotator cuff tendon can cause arm weakness and pain and may be a complete or partial tear.

Frozen Shoulder

The common name for the medical condition ‘Adhesive Capsulitis’.  A surprisingly common condition and one that gradually gets worse over several weeks or months. Pain worsens and mobility in the shoulder decreases as inflammation increases. The shoulder joint is unable to function properly and ultimately, any movement is very difficult and painful.

Tendonitis

Is caused by repeated use of the arms above the head, such as painting a ceiling or throwing a cricket ball is another painful injury.

Rotator Cuff impingement

This causes symptoms similar to Tendonitis. The tendons are squeezed between two bones, the Humerus and the Acromion.

Bursitis

This can occur when the small sac of fluid (the bursa) that cushions the tendons in the rotator cuff from the Acromion bone becomes inflamed.
